Winter sports in full stride this week for Garces athletics

Winter sports is off and running at full speed this week for Garces athletics. 

The action begins this evening as the girls soccer team begins the 2019-20 season on the road at Tehachapi at 6 p.m.

The Rams were 12-11-3 overall last season and 2-6-2 in Southwest Yosemite League action.

Stevie Reynolds returns for Garces after leading the Rams with 21 goals as a freshman last season.

In fact, the youthful squad for coach Caitin Witwer returns the top five goal scorers and goalkeeper Mia Sill.

The home opener for Garces is Thursday against North. 

Two Garces volleyball seniors get one more shot on the court with a Rams jersey on Wednesday in the annual Kern County all-star game. Luisa and Jana Dulcich will play in the first of two games at Centennial High starting at 6 p.m.

The JV boys also open up season play today at 4 p.m. against the Warriors at home.

Also on Thursday, the boys basketball team is in a three-day tournament at Morro Bay. 

The Rams begin with a 7 p.m. game on Thursday against Morro Bay and again at 3:30 p.m. on Friday against Arroyo Grande, one of the top teams in the Central Section Division I playoffs last season. Garces then plays Orcutt Academy at noon on Saturday in pool play before the championship games begin.

The JV boys basketball team is in action at the East High Tournament Thursday through Saturday and the frosh/soph team plays in the Foothill High Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

After a 6-0 win over Tehachapi before Thanksgiving break, the Garces boys soccer team is back in action Friday and Saturday in the South High tournament.

The Rams begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday on Field No. 9 at Kern County Soccer Park against Mira Monte and then play play Mojave at 4:14 on Field No. 10. Play will resume Saturday morning with the championships set for 1:45 p.m.

The boys wrestling team is also in action this week in the 11th annual Chukchansi Invitational at Madera South High on Friday and Saturday. 

Junior DeAndre Beldo finished first last Saturday in the 220-pound division at the Golden Legends Invitational at Eastside High in Lancaster. 

The Rams are also home in a dual meet against Highland at 6 p.m. on Dec. 12 in the gym.
