THIS WEEK IN GARCES ATHLETICS: Football finale and signing ceremony highlight big week

This week in Garces Athletics

The football season winds to a close this Friday at home against Bakersfield Christian and on Wednesday at lunch at Sam Tobias Field, we will honor five seniors who will sign letters of intent to a four-year college athletic program. 

DeAndre Beldo (wrestling, Gannon University), Julianna Escobedo (golf, Wellesley College), Austin Galanski (water polo, University of Redlands), Isabella Garces (water polo, Santa Clara University) and Brady Highfill (soccer, Westmont College) will all be honored on Wednesday. 


The Rams were in a pitcher’s duel on Friday night at home against Bakersfield Christian before the Eagles scored eight runs in the top of the fifth in a 15-3 loss for Garces.

The Rams (0-3) are back in action on Wednesday at Visalia- Golden West (5-5) 4 p.m.

Girls basketball

The Rams open the shortened season on Thursday at home against Santa Maria-St. Joseph at 6 p.m. After a 14-month layoff because of the pandemic, the Addi McMurtrey-led Rams are eager to get the season started. The boys open the season on April 22 at home against. St. Joseph. 


The Rams will finish out the season on Friday night at Sam Tobias Field against Bakersfield Christian. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Rams fell to Lancaster-Paraclete last week 34-6. Ian Jernagin led the game off with a 46-yard run and scored the lone touchdown in the first quarter. He had a season-high 165 rushing yards in the loss. Dom D’Amato had two interceptions and Logan Bowers led the way with 14 tackles. 


The Rams are off this week in preparation for next week’s match in Ventura against St. Bonaventure.


The girls soccer team is idle this week after Stevie Reynolds led the way with an incredible seven goals in the 10-0 win at Frazier Mountain last week. The boys host Paraclete today at 6 p.m. The Rams (4-0) looking to stay undefeated. Garces has defeated teams by a combined score of 20-1 after Alex Halevy scored a school-record seven goals in the 12-0 win over Simi Valley-Royal last week. 


The Rams (5-2) sit atop the Central Section Division II standing by MaxPreps after an impressive sweep over previously-undefeated Porterville-Monache on Friday. Ellie Waguespack led the way in the sweep. The Rams are on the road for three games this week. Today, Garces plays a double-header at Taft beginning at 4 p.m. and is at Paso Robles on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.


Both teams are in action today at Delano-Chavez. The Rams swept Tehachapi last week. Jackie Sala led the way for an 8-1 win at home over the Warriors while Nico Fanucchi led the boys to a 9-0 win on the road.

Track and Field

The majority of the track and field team will begin the season this Saturday at the Central Valley Relays in Dinuba.

However, senior Zach Buckey, one of the top discus throwers this season in California, hit a mark of 163 feet, 9 inches on Saturday at the Central Coast Track and Field Club Open in Salinas. That mark is good for No. 4 in the state.
