This Week in Garces Athletics: Break is over and action is back

Welcome back, Rams. After what was hopefully a peaceful break for most, Garces Athletics is back in action this week with competition six days, including golf in action Monday afternoon in Lemoore and concluding with swim and water polo Senior Day at Salvucci Aquatic Center on Saturday.

It was a tough start for the baseball team two weeks ago as the Rams lost the first two games to Visalia-El Diamante in a home and away series. In the season opener at home on March 24, the Rams lost 20-3. Joseph Gutierrez led the way for Garces with a home run. The Rams then lost on the road to El Diamante 12-3 on March 26.

The Rams are back in action Friday night at home against Bakersfield Christian with JV at 4:30 p.m. and varsity playing at 7 p.m.

The Garces boys and girls golf teams are in action three times this week, including Monday at Lemoore and twice in town. The Rams host Taft at Stockdale Country Club on Wednesday and are at Bakersfield Country Club on Thursday.

On March 25, both teams were in competition in Lancaster as the girls swept their 9-hole matches. On the boys side, Giancarlo Sacco and Palmer Bank both shot 69s as Aidan Sorci shot a 71 as the Rams posted another great team score of 371.

It was a tough two weeks for Garces football against two formidable Southern Section opponents. On March 27, Garces lost to La Canada-St. Francis 48-42 in a thriller. After the Rams trailed 48-42 with five minutes to play, the Rams were able to score consecutive touchdowns with two converted on-side kicks to keep the Golden Knights offense off the field. But a last second interception spoiled the comeback.

On April 3, Garces hosted nationally-ranked Sierra Canyon in a 42-0 loss. The defense forced two Trail Blazers turnovers but could not find the end zone as Sierra Canyon has not allowed a point in three games.

The Rams are back in action Friday night against Lancaster-Paraclete at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Antelope Valley College and will be live-streamed for those unable to attend on the Garces Athletics YouTube page. No general admission allowed.

Boys soccer

The Garces boys soccer team is back in action Tuesday against Simi Valley-Royal at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Rams are undefeated at 3-0 after beating Lindsay 2-0 on March 23 behind a shutout from Brady Highfill and two goals by Fletcher Bank.

Girls soccer

The Rams evened the season record at 1-1 with a 7-3 win over Lindsay at home. Junior Gabby Guerrero scored four goals for the Rams in the big victory.

Garces is in action twice this week. Tuesday, the Rams host Santa Maria-St. Joseph at 4:30 p.m. in a varsity-only double-header before the boys game at 7 p.m.

The Rams then travel to Frazier Mountain on Wednesday.

The Garces swim team has been going strong for a month now and will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday against Arroyo Grande.

On March 24 at home against Tulare Western, the boys 200 medley relay team of Rory Begin, Matthew St. Claire, Toby Jones and George Rice hit a Valley cut time of 1 minute, 47.22 seconds while senior Isabella Garcia hit a Valley cut time of 2:19.89 in the girls 200 individual medley. Garcia, along with her sister, Gianna, Logan Wimbish and Mary King also swam a personal-best time of 32:57.95 in the 400 freestyle relay to better their already Valley cut time in the event.

The boys tennis team opened up the season with a scrimmage victory over BCHS before an 8-1 loss on the road against Visalia-Redwood.
The Rams are back in action on the road Thursday at Tehachapi at 3:30 p.m.

The girls tennis team is now 2-0 after an 8-1 victory at home against Redwood on March 24. Freshmen Jocelyn Sala and Kelsey Abraham and sophomore Kylie Limpias led the way with singles victories and seniors Jackie Sala and Matea Thomas helped lead the Rams in sweeps in doubles play against Redwood.

The Rams host Tehachapi at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.

It’s another big week for Garces softball with three games at home. The Rams host Visalia-Golden West at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and will host Porterville-Monache in a double-header beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday.

The Rams are 2-2 this season after defeating Tulare Union 2-0 on March 24. Senior Arianna Silva threw a complete game, six-hit shutout with eight strikeouts as Carlie Cheek drove in both runs for the Rams.

Water Polo

It’s been a long time coming, but the Garces girls water polo team will finally get in the pool on Saturday against Arroyo Grande.

The Arroyo Grande girls team had to cancel the season opener on March 25 due to Covid-19 protocols.

The boys water polo team is 2-0 this season. The Rams beat Arroyo Grande at Nipomo High School 18-13 on March 25. George Rice and Rory Begin led the way with six goals as Austin Galanski scored three. Sophomore Matthew St. Claire had 10 saves in the win.

The boys will also play Saturday at home against Arroyo Grande on Senior Day.
