With Christmas Break over and school back in session, for Garces athletics, it means the start of the Southwest Yosemite League schedule for winter sports.
Let’s take a look back from the holiday action and a look towards league play.
Boys basketball: The Rams (9-4) head into league play with a five-game win streak after take home the title at the Garces Elite Eight Challenge on Saturday. The Rams defeated Chavez 61-46 in the finals behind a 24-point performance by Ipreye Egbe.
On deck: First up in SWYL play is a road game on Wednesday at Frontier. F/S begins 3:30 p.m., JV at 4:45 and varsity at 6 p.m. The Rams are at home on Friday against Bakersfield. Same time for F/S and JV and varsity will begin at 7:15.
The week will conclude with Holy Saturday at Fresno-San Joaquin Memorial at 1:30/3/4:30 p.m.
Girls basketball: It was a busy break for the girls basketball team with seven games in two tournaments in Arvin and Clovis. At the Arvin Holiday Showcase, the Rams (1-8) secured their first win of the season in a 61-51 victory over Golden Valley. Junior Addisyn McMurtrey is one of the top scorers in the section, averaging 20.6 points per game and freshman Mia D’Amato is averaging 10.4 points and 12.6 rebounds per game.
On deck: The Rams are at Frontier at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, 6 p.m. on Friday at BHS and at SJM at noon on Saturday.
Boys soccer: Undermanned over the break, the Rams split their two games with a 5-0 victory over Tulare-Mission Oak on Dec. 19 and lost a 3-2 overtime decision at home against Highland. Garces (9-2) is ranked 26th in the state by MaxPreps and No. 2 in the Central Section. Alexander Halevy leads the team with 16 goals and Moises Cisneros has 11 goals and a team-high 10 assists.
On deck: With Ebube Ekpemogu back at full strength after a month off to a quad injury, the Rams are eager begin SWYL play at Frontier at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The Rams are home against BHS on Friday at 6 p.m. JV will start at at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday and are at SJM on Saturday at 1 p.m. with varsity at 4 p.m.
Girls soccer: With just one game on tap over the break, the Rams fell to Highland at home on Friday, 5-3. Like the boys, injuries took their toll on Garces (4-2), but got a lot of offense from Stevie Reynolds, who scored a hat trick against the Scots.
On deck: League opener is at home against Frontier (JV 4 p.m., Varsity 6 p.m.) and at BHS on Friday. JV plays at SJM at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and varsity is at 2:30 p.m.
Boys wrestling: Freshman Tye Monteiro is making waves this season. On Saturday at the Tournament of Champions, Monteiro finished fourth at 152-pounds. Ranked 26th in the state at 152, Monteiro has led a formidable group of wrestlers for Garces over the holidays along with Aiden Meek, DeAndre Beldo and Jalen Smith.
On deck: The Rams are competing on Saturday at the KC Invite at Centennial.
