PREVIEW: Garces boys wrestling gears up for D-IV championships

The Garces boys wrestling team is as strong as ever and geared up for a postseason push.

In a possible 14 weight classes, the Rams are sending 13 athletes to the Central Section Division IV championships this Friday and Saturday at Visalia-Golden West.

Led by freshman Tye Monteiro, ranked No. 24 in the state at 152 pounds, Garces has two top seeds and another two that are seeded in the top-6 in their weight classes.

Monteiro is 24-6 this season after winning the Coyote Classic and placing top-4 at elite tournaments like Chukchansi, TOC and Midcals.

Also seeded No. 1 is junior DeAndre Beldo at 220.

Beldo is 20-9 this season with wins at Golden Legends, Coyote Classic and the Highland Invitational.

Also seeded are Aidan Meek (No. 3, 285) and freshman Milo Mastrucci (6th, 160).

Of the 11 teams in competition in the D-IV championships, Garces is one of just three with two top seeds.

The Rams are in the mix as a section divisional champion. The Rams have the eighth-most seeded wrestlers in the tournament.

Last season, Emmauel Castro won the first divisional title for Garces at 285 as the Rams tied for 19th place in D-III.

The top four seeds in each weight class automatically advance to the Central Section Masters next weekend at Lemoore High School.
