Jernagin sets Garces rushing record in 58-12 win over BCHS

In a normal year, the regular season finale would be a set up for the Central Section playoffs and the excitement of a rivalry game would culminate with a look-ahead to a playoff push.

But in this shortened Spring 2021 schedule, Friday’s Homecoming game for Garces Memorial is a final stamp on the 5-game schedule, and the Rams made the most of it with a 58-12 drubbing of Bakersfield Christian behind a record-breaking school record of 381 rushing yards for junior running back Ian Jernagin.

Jernagin broke the record of 380 previously set by Sheldon Croney in 2013. Jernagin also scored four rushing touchdowns of 65, 3, 49 and 14 yards behind the work of starting offensive linemen Aidan Meek, DeAndre Beldo, Davis May, Ethan Shipp, Blake Allen and Thomas Lett.

The 46-point win margin is the largest for Garces since beating Highland 49-0 on Oct. 5, 2013.

BCHS (1-2) scored on the opening drive of the game, taking a 6-0 lead after a failed two-point conversion. The Rams responded as sophomore quarterback Julian Smith connected with Dom D’Amato for a 23-yard touchdown pass.

Smith finished the night with 91 passing yards and three touchdowns on 6 of 10 passing, replacing Travis Plugge at quarterback. Plugge broke his hand in the first quarter last week at Lancaster-Paraclete. Smith found D’Amato again for a 25-yard pass and connected with Zion Hall for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

The Rams (2-3) rushed 34 times for 473 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Sophomore Zamir Hall had six carries for 82 yards and intercepted two passes on defense at linebacker.

The Rams held the Eagles offense to just one score and 194 total yards of offense on 44 plays. BCHS defense scored on a fumble recovery for Kreasean Kizzy in the first quarter.
