Garces soccer, basketball programs prepare for postseason

The regular season ended for the Garces boys and girls basketball and soccer teams on Wednesday.

Those four varsity programs will now prepare for postseason play that will begin in earnest next week.

The boys soccer team defeated Stockdale 3-0 on Wednesday. Ebube Ekpemogu, Alexander Halvey and Abraham Gonzalez all scored for the Rams.

Garces finishes the regular season with a 21-2 overall record and went 10-0 to secure a second consecutive outright Southwest Yosemite League title.

The Rams, the defending CIF Southern California Division V champions, are the likely No. 1 seed in the Central Section Division IV playoffs. The brackets will be released later this week and begin with the first round on Tuesday.

The Garces girls lost at home on Senior Night to Stockdale, 3-1.

The Rams are 6-11 this season and 1-9 in a very difficult SWYL. The Rams will await their seeding in the D-II playoffs, also announced later this week.

The girls soccer section playoffs begin next Wednesday.

Both basketball teams for Garces are in a new situation with the regular season ending a week earlier than usual.

The inaugural South Yosemite Conference tournament begins with three play-in games on Saturday and both Garces programs in action on Monday.

The tournament consists of the 18 schools that comprise the three Yosemite leagues in Kern County, including the SWYL, South Yosemite and Southeast Yosemite leagues.

The boys basketball program finished the regular season with a 54-51 loss at Stockdale on a buzzer-beater. The Rams are 15-9 and 6-4 in SWYL play.

Garces was seeded third in the SYC tournament, that will run Monday-Thursday next week at various sites in Bakersfield, and will play Foothill at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Centennial.

The Garces girls basketball team (1-20, 0-10 SWYL) ended the regular season with a 58-38 road loss at Stockdale.

The Rams are seeded 15th in the SYC and open with No. 2 Tehachapi (14-1, 9-0 SYL) in the opening round of the girls bracket at 6 p.m. on Monday in the old gym at North High.

After the tournament concluded with the championship games in the new gym at North on Feb. 13, the brackets for the Central Section playoffs will be released in the afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The opening round of the section boys basketball playoffs begin Tuesday, Feb. 18 and the girls basketball playoffs begin Feb. 19.
