The emotions of winning the program’s first Central Section championship in five years seemingly never got the best of the Garces girls water polo team.
Three days after the Rams beat Porterville-Monache for the section Division II title, Garces defeated Tracy-Kimball 19-8 in the opening round of the CIF Northern California D-III regional playoffs at Salvucci Aquatics Center on Tuesday.
The Rams did get out, offensively, to a slow start. Garces led 3-2 after the first quarter, but scored eight times in the second to take an 11-4 lead into halftime.
“We just realized how slow we were playing and we just had to step it up,” sophomore Logan Wimbish said.
Wimbish and freshman Abby Schechter led Garces (25-6) with six goals each and Wimbish also had five steals on the defensive side.
Isabella Garcia added three goals while Lily Alsop and Mia Sill both added two.
The Rams, seed third in the regional playoffs, will play the winner of No. 2 Mill Valley-Tamalpais vs. No. 7 San Jose-Presentation on Thursday.
“We know we play well together and know that we have good chemistry,” Wimbish said. “We know the more fun we have, the more confidence we have. I don’t think it matters where we play.”
Boys water polo advances on the road
Garces boys traveled five hours north to Sacramento and came away victorious in the NorCal D-II regional opener.
The 5th-seeded Rams defeated No. 4 Granite Bay 12-6 with Joe Starr leading the way with six goals.
George Rice and Chance Miller added two goals while Peter Gonzalez and Rory Begin each had one.
The Rams will play either No. 1 Clovis-Buchanan or No. 8 Fair Oaks-Bella Vista in the semifinals on Tuesday.
