In what likely is the final double-header for the Garces boys and girls water polo teams, the day ended with a lot of smiling faces for the Rams.
Beginning at 11 a.m., the top-seeded Rams hosted No. 8 Exeter in the Central Section Division II girls water polo quarterfinals.
Junior Isabella Garcia scored four goals in the first half as Garces led 5-0.
Freshman Abby Schecther scored all of her four goals in the second half as the Rams beat the Monarchs 10-1 behind an eight-save performance by junior Ellie Waguespack.
The Rams will host No. 4 Paso Robles at 3 p.m. on Wednesday in the D-II semifinals.
The boys match was not as easy.
The Rams trailed 6-5 at the half to the Cougars and were tied 9-9 in the fourth quarter before Garces was able to pull away in the final three minutes.
Freshman Peter Gonzalez was able to score a goal in the final two minutes and goalie Nate James made two crucial saves late as Garces advances to the semifinals on Wednesday at No. 2 Clovis West. The start time is still to be determined to allow head coach Jason Gall enough room to be able to coach the girls at home at the Salvucci Aquatic Center and allow enough drive-time up the 99 to Clovis West for the boys semifinals.
Joe Starr led the way with five goals for Garces as George Rice added four and Gonzales had two goals. James recorded 12 saves for the Rams.
