Garces boys basketball defeats Foothill in opening round of SYC

The Garces boys basketball team put in the best offensive first-half performance in a 77-40 win over Foothill on Monday at Centennial in the opening round of the inaugural South Yosemite Conference Tournament.

Dom D’Amato scored 12 of his game-high 14 points in the first half as 3-rd seeded Garces (16-8) scored 50 points before intermission as nine Rams scored in the win.

Ipreye Egbe added 12 points while Jack Hatten and Joseph Campbell also scored in double figures with 10 points each.

The SYC tournament is a postseason tournament created this season that puts all of the teams from the three Yosemite leagues in Kern County during the four-day tournament that concludes on Thursday. This tournament precedes the Central Section playoffs that begin next week.

Garces will play the winner of Centennial vs. Mira Monte at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the quarterfinals at Centennial.

“I love the idea of the postseason tournament,” Garces coach Brian Dignan said. “It’s good to play a team that’s not in your league that you don’t see all the time. Both teams played hard. We were really efficient offensively and made some early shots. We just kept it rolling and played consistently with a purpose.”

Garces held a 19-16 lead after the first quarter before going on scoring runs of 9-0 and 10-0 the end second quarter to take a 50-24 lead over Foothill (12-13) into the half.

The Rams outscored Foothill 57-17 in the second and third quarters.

“Points were definitely scored in this game,” Hatten said. “We had (four players) score above 10 points. That’s pretty big for us and I think we are going to come out strong tomorrow. It feels great. Looking forward to the second round.”
