Garces Athletes of the Week for Oct. 18

Better late than never, here is the Garces athletes of the week for Oct. 18.

Boys cross country

Darius Picar, senior: Asked to be moved from junior varsity up to varsity to help the boys cross country team enough runners to score as a team at the final Southwest Yosemite League meet last week at River Walk Park.

Girls cross country

Kate Champness, senior: Despite battling Valley Fever, Kate competed in both events last week after just getting cleared for competition.


Joseph Campbell, senior: Threw for 205 yards and three touchdowns and ran another score in as the Rams beat Centennial 41-3 on the road without turning the ball over. Completed 18 of 24 passes.

Jalen Smith, junior: Set the tone for the Rams last week blocking and returning a punt on the opening possession of the game against Centennial, then scored the first touchdown five plays later. Had four tackles and rushed for nearly 60 yards in the win.

Girls tennis

Stephanie Mercado, senior: Helped lead the Rams to two wins last week, including senior night last Thursday as the Rams went into Monday’s match at Stockdale undefeated. 

Volleyball: Caroline Napier, junior: Led Garces with 15 kills, including six in the fifth set as the Rams defeated Centennial at home 3-2 during the week where Garces also beat BHS at home. 

Boys water polo

George Rice, junior: Scored six goals versus Tulare Western on Thursday to help the team improve to 6-0 in league play and had another big game in tournament play in Orange County over the weekend.

Ellie Waguespack, junior: Recorded nine saves over Tulare Western last week while pitching a shutout for the first 25 minutes over the Mustangs in a 17-1 win. The Rams are 5-1 in league play. 

Because of a scheduling conflict, there is no group shot of the athletes, but that photo will be taken next week and added to the story. Thanks for your understanding.
