Freshman Abby Schechter saved her top performance during the first week of her high school career for the final match of the weekend for the Garces girls water polo program.
Schechter scored all seven goals, including the game-winner 15 seconds into the sudden death overtime, to seal a 7-6 victory over Sanger in the ninth-place match at the Clovis West Invitational on Saturday afternoon in the 16-team tournament.
The Rams (4-1) opened up play Friday with a 12-3 loss to Clovis North, but rallied to win the final three matches.
Garces defeated Stockton-St. Mary’s 8-3 in the second match on Friday to continue play to Saturday morning. Schechter and sophomore Logan Wimbish each had three goals against St. Mary’s while Wimbish added five steals.
In the first match on Saturday, Garces defeated Porterville 7-4 with Schechter leading the way with three goals and junior Ellie Waguespack had 11 of her 30 saves during the tournament against the Panthers.
The Rams are not in action until a weekend tournament on Sept. 19-20 in Arroyo Grande.
