Escobedo’s win kicks off big week for Garces athletics

A big day for Garces junior Julianna Escobedo kicks off a big week of athletics for the Rams this week.

The junior shot a 5-over-par 79 at the first Southwest Yosemite League girls golf tournament at Bakersfield Country Club on Monday.

Escobedo’s score was the lowest round of the tournament as the Rams finished in fifth as a team in the six-team league tournament.

Other Rams in competition on Monday: Angelika Stevens (112), Julia Hernandez (121), Bella Burks (136), Tara Miller (148) and Ava Dykes (151).

Varsity at Tehachapi in season opener 

There are two varsity events for Garces athletics on Wednesday as the volleyball team kicks off the 2019 season with all-level matches at Tehachapi.

The Rams are coming off a 31-10 season in which the team advanced to the CIF Southern Californian Division II regional semifinals.

Garces graduated eight seniors from last season’s squad, so the competition for the starting rotation is still on-going for coaches Kim Harper and John Price.

Garces is also competiting in the East High Tournament this weekend.

Water polo to host season openers on Wednesday 

Leading the way during preseason practice are juniors Jana and Luisa Dulcich and freshman Mia D’Amato has made great improvements for a shot at the starting lineup on Wednesday.
The boys and girls water polo teams are hosting season-opening varsity-only matches at home against Bakersfield Christian on Wednesday.

First up at 3 p.m. is the boys team. Garces won the previous two Central Section D-II titles and the Rams are now in D-I for the playoffs this season.

The girls team, which went 17-8 and advanced to the section D-II semifinals will take on BCHS at 4 p.m. after the boys match.

The girls water polo team is also in action Friday and Saturday in tournament play at Clovis West.

Football home opener on Friday

After a heart-breaking 22-0 loss to Bakersfield Christian on the road last Friday, the Rams are eager to get back on the field at home against Santa Maria-St. Joseph on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Despite the loss, the Rams can hang their hats on a stellar first-half performance by the defense.

Jalen Smith recovered a fumble and Dom D’Amato and Justin Eccleston both had an inteception before halftime and D’Amato added another in the second half as Phillip Bradford also recovered a fumble. 

St. Joseph opened the season with a 35-7 drubbing of Visalia-Central Valley Christian last week. 

The frosh/soph team is on a bye this week and the JV team will play at 5 p.m. on Friday.
