Like she has done so many times before this season, Sierra Kent continues to build the legacy as the “Comeback Queen” for the Garces girls tennis team.
With the Rams clinging to a 4-1 lead over Bakersfield Christian in the Central Section Division I quarterfinals, Kent pulled off another incredible comeback.
Already down 1-0 and trailing 5-0 in the second set of her No. 4 singles match, Kent reeled off seven consecutive games to beat Hannah Kratt 7-5 to force a 10-point tie-breaker.
That’s when Kent decided to make it interesting once again.
Kent, down 9-7, reeled off the final four points, including an ace to seal the 4-6, 7-5 (11-9) the victory and secured the win in singles play for Garces.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Kent said. “My mind just went blank right afterwards until my teammates rushed the court.”
No. 2 Garces defeated No. 7 Bakersfield Christian 8-1 and will host No. 3 Clovis-Buchanan on Thursday in the D-I semifinals. Time has not be set for the semifinals.
Garces took an early 4-0 lead when Alexsia Drulias beat Breanna Hiebert 6-1, 6-0 in No. 1 singles while Kylee Limpias beat Sydney Carrieri 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles, Jackie Sala defeated Lauren Buetow 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 and Stephanie Mercado beat Kelsey Bloemhof 6-2, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.
