On Monday morning, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and the Central Section put out scheduled dates for the start of high school sports for the 2020-21 school year.
Although most of the state of California is currently unable to gather and COVID-19 protocols have most schools using distance learning to start the 2020-21 school year, the State CIF and Central Section offices both announced a proposal for the start dates for high school sports in California.
While having a plan moving forward, it’s imperative to note that Kern County still needs to be cleared for large gatherings before any sports on campus can begin. Garces Memorial and the Diocese of Fresno will follow the guidelines set forth by state and local health officials on large gatherings.
If and when high school sports are cleared to commence locally, the exciting information is there is a plan in place for sports for the 2020-21 school year. Cross country, water polo and volleyball have been given a date of Dec. 28 to start competition and football can begin playing games on Jan. 7. All other sports are now considered “spring sports” this year. Soccer and boys AND girls tennis first contest date is slated for March 8. Swim and dive, wrestling and basketball are a March 20 start time. Finally, baseball, softball, boys AND girls golf and track and field are slated to begin March 27.
The Garces Memorial athletic department will continue to update any information provided about COVID-19 health updates and any information about schedules, practices and updates from the CIF and Central Section.
