Boys, girls water polo successful in tourneys up north

Both the varsity boys and girls water polo programs went to Northern California over the weekend and came away with 3-1 tournament records.

In Sacramento at the tournament at Jesuit High School, the boys capped off the successful two days with an 11-6 victory over the host Marauders while the girls team beat Ripon, 13-3, to take home third place at the tournament at the Western States Tournament at Johansen High in Modesto.

Abby Schechter led the way for the girls with 14 goals in the four games in Stockton while Logan Wimbish added eight. Isabella Garcia scored five of her six points in tournament play in the win over Ripon.

The girls beat San Jose-Valley Christian 8-4 to open tournament play on Friday and followed up with a 10-7 win over Newberg High from Oregon.

After a morning loss to Davis, 10-5, the Rams responded with the win over Ripon.

Ellie Waguespack recorded 26 saves.

Like the girls, the boys opened up with two wins on Friday, beating Stockton-St. Mary’s 10-4 and a 7-2 win over San Jose-Valley Christian.

On Saturday morning, the Rams lost to Sacramento-Rio Americano 10-9 in round-robin tournament play only to finish up and beat Jesuit to end the tournament.

Joe Starr led the way with 21 goals and Rory Begin added nine. Nathan James finished with 40 saves, including nine against Rio Americano.
