2013-14 Annual Report
A Letter from the President

I am honored to share with you the Garces Memorial High School 2013-14 Annual Report.  This year I celebrate my 44th year at Garces Memorial High School.  As a 1968 graduate, an educator, long-time coach and administrator I have witnessed many changes during my tenure.  One thing has never changed in those 44 years.  Garces Memorial is and will always be first and foremost a Catholic school, a school rich in tradition whose foundation is solid and resilient.  I marvel at the young women and men we educate every year, how they become strong in their faith and confident in their talents, all dynamic in their own way, going forward to lead, serve and inspire.

Where would these wonderful young people be without Garces Memorial?  Some, in fact quite a few, would still prosper and grow in a different setting, but would they have the one thing this unique opportunity offers?  Would they have the opportunity of sharing and growing in their faith with their classmates?  Would they be able to pray together during difficult times and give thanks and praise during joyous times?  This is what sets us apart.  This is what makes Garces Memorial unique and important to so many.

Our Garces Memorial community is made up of students, their families, a dedicated faculty and staff, strong and faithful alumni, a supportive and committed Catholic community, and everyone else who knows the value of a high school that educates the entire person.  This community has come together over the years to support the school in so many ways.  Many of you have invested your time, talent and resources to ensure this school is here for future generations.

Over the last decade we have seen a number of improvements and changes made to the campus.  These capital projects have been for the benefit of all of our students.  These projects have had a positive impact on our student’s spiritual, academic, and social growth.  Our most recent addition is The Art of Music, a beautiful music room, which is highlighted in this issue of Mission Magazine.

While so much change has occurred on our campus over the years, one blessing that has always remained constant has been the dedication and selflessness of our donors and supporters, donors who understand, that the school cannot “live on new construction alone.”    We must continue to provide our students with programs which enhance their spiritual growth.  We must continue to provide our students with the most up-to-date technology and programs to enhance their learning experience.  We must continue to provide our students with extra-curricular and social programs that are meaningful.  These programs include student retreats, campus ministry, fine arts, athletics, and numerous other spiritual, academic, and extra-curricular programs.  The school must continue to have the support of the community for the day-to-day programs and services we offer our young people. Those gifts are giving our young people the opportunity to really know what it is like to be a part of this family which is Garces Memorial High School.

Garces Memorial is and will always be a very special place to me because of the incredible people who make up this faith-filled, committed and generous community.  There is something truly extraordinary about Garces Memorial and each and every one of you has played an integral role in our growth.  I look forward to continuing to work with you so that we can continue to provide excellence in Catholic education for our students, today and in the future.

May God continue to bless you and your families.  May God continue to bless Garces Memorial High School.
